ABOUT ME

I am a Scottish glass artist working from my studio in Edinburgh where I make unique, bespoke glass vessels and wall hangings. I’ve always been fascinated by glass and its unique properties , how it can be the ultimate shape changer, morphing from one state to another and back again, and in 2013 I had the opportunity to take a short course in stained glass at Edinburgh Art College.  The course involved glass fusing and it was at this point that I fell in love with this  technique – transforming simple pieces of sheet glass in to something beautiful and tactile – which  led me to take the only undergraduate glass course in Scotland in 2016, graduating with an HND in Art Glass Design in 2018, and winning both the Incorporation of Wrights award for Painting in Glass, awarded by Trades House in Glasgow and the Graduate Best of Year award in 2018, awarded by the Scottish Glass Society.   Since then I have been continually pushing back the limits of my knowledge, primarily through personal experimentation in my studio , but also by participating in masterclasses with some the of the best contemporary glass artists in the world today.

Much of my work, particularly my vessels,  is inspired by the patterns and colours that occur naturally in the Scottish landscape;  my love of the coast and the sea is a particular influence.  The qualities of the glass itself also constantly fascinate me, its transparency and  opacity, how, as an artist, I can create layers, pattern, depth and texture and all this with its ability to transmit and reflect light. Using these properties and a formula of heat, gravity and time I can control the flow of molten glass in the kiln, manipulating line, colour and form to make vessels that reflect the relationship between land, sea and sky.

In my wall hangings, I repurpose antique printers trays sourced here in the UK and in France, filling them with  glass tiles to create an overall picture. I enjoy making personalised trays where each tile is designed with the final owner in mind and the resulting made to order pieces are highly individual, colourful and distinctive.  A life in glass!
